PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The proposal aims to create new connections between fjord and mountains, between the Sky-Station and the surrounding city and between the different parts of the city centre. The intention being to make it easier and more enjoyable and more rewarding for it's inhabitants.

Åndalsnes is a place with great potential. There is magnificent scenery, history, tourism, and a stable and committed local population. However, the city currently falls short of reaching it's full potential. Our proposal aims to enhance the
existing qualities of the city while also creating new opportunities for both locals and visitors to enjoy.

A future experience of Åndalsnes should remind one that they are in the middle of a fantastic landscape. We proposed to achieve this by a creating seaside walk as well as two new buildings, a Gondola Station and a Stairwell. The intention of these two structures is to create new interactions with the surrounding environment.

The new centrally located gondola terminal coupled with a hire-boat marina provide the opportunity for easy access to fun day excursions and day trips. Improved camping and marina locations aim to attract visitors to stay a little longer.

Åndalsnes needs to retain its small town character but at the same time become more urban. To foster this transition we created new urban square, and proposed densification of the centre by filling in some under-developed sites to thereby create a more cohesive network of spaces. The existing scale of 3-4 storey buildings was retained. We also suggests several new avenues and parks of various character to make the future Åndalsnes a greener city.
